Advances In sCMOS Camera Technology Benefit Bio Research

By QImaging

Since the inception of digital microscopy, scientific-grade CCD cameras have been the gold standard for imaging due to their sensitivity, linear response to light, and low noise characteristics. However, many cell mechanisms occur on short time scales and emit low luminescence signals, making imaging difficult for slower CCD cameras. This technical note discusses why scientific CMOS (sCMOS) is becoming the sensor technology of choice for live cell fluorescence applications, largely due to their combination of very low electronic noise, high frame rates, and a large field of view.
