By Adam Stops, DDS Head of Product Management, Stevanato Group, and William Fortina, Business Development Director, Duo Ject

Every second counts when a life is at stake. In the case of an emergency auto-injector (EAI), it's also crucial that it works right first time – so it needs to be reliable, safe, and easy for anyone to use during a crisis. This was the challenge facing the team behind the Maverick EAI – and why human factors (HF) studies played a key role in the design process.
In an emergency, people tend to panic and find it difficult to make rational decisions, with the result that even the simplest task can become complex. Training and experience can minimize this reaction to stressful situations. But there is no guarantee that a trained expert will be on hand every time someone suffers a life-threatening allergic reaction. So, an EAI has to be capable of delivering a life-saving dose of drugs quickly and effectively, no matter who is using it.
