GE Healthcare, in partnership with Swedish medical device firm Getinge Group, has launched a “highly flexible” angiography solution for hybrid operating room (OR) procedures.  The solution combines GE’s Discovery IGS 730 angiography system with Getinge Group Maquet brand’s Magnus operating table system, which broadens the capabilities and services available in a hospital’s Hybrid OR.

A hybrid OR combines a standard surgical suite with state-of-the-art imaging equipment, which allows for more minimally invasive procedures and greater flexibility in interventional medicine. GE Healthcare currently offers 11 hybrid OR system options, specializing in cardiovascular or endovascular procedures, OR-based ultrasound, or anesthesia delivery systems. The Discovery IGS 730 angiography system was first introduced in 2011 and offers high-resolution, image-guided intervention on a completely mobile gantry for added flexibility during procedures.

Through the collaboration with Getinge Group, first announced last year, GE is combining the Discovery IGS with the Magnus operating table system. The Magnus features X-ray capabilities and advanced positioning possibilities. Patients can be inclined 80 degrees or tilted 45 degrees for “greater ergonomic success.”

“The Maquet table brings additional clinical breadth to the hybrid operating rooms. It should complement GE’s unique mobile gantry technology to fit the needs of virtually any surgery and interventional specialty,” said Chantal Le Chat, Global GM Interventional from GE Healthcare, in a press release last year.

The solution, first unveiled in London in 2015, was officially launched at the Society for Vascular Surgery’s 2016 Vascular Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. Markus Medart, president of Maquet, commented that the joint development is a “milestone” towards positioning the company as global market leader for complete solutions for the hybrid OR.

“Hybrid ORs have become the standard of care at medical centers throughout the United States as these multidisciplinary and multi-purpose rooms have been shown to lead to improved clinical outcomes for cardiothoracic and other patients,” said Mark Rider, VP of Marketing for the Americas, Surgical Workflows Division of Getinge Group, in a recent press release. “With the U.S. launch of this new integrated solution, hospitals across the country will be able to provide the best care for their patients who require a variety of multidisciplinary surgical interventions.”

Getinge Group also recently announced the FDA’s approval of expanded indications for its Sterizone VP4 sterilizer for the low temperature sterilization of complex endoscopes. The solution is now approved for colonoscopies, gastroscopes, and other scopes possessing up to four channels and 3.5 meters in length. With expanded indications, Getinge Group plans to expand its commercialization of the product into GI and endoscopy clinics.

Earlier this month, GE Healthcare announced a “first of its kind” outcomes-based innovation collaboration with Mission Health, which will aim to optimize radiology and replace out-of-date monitoring and telemetry equipment in Mission Health’s 730 bed high-volume hospital.  By updating equipment, the partnership anticipates an increase in “system-wide” efficiency and significant cost savings for the hospital and patients.
