Synthetic Fused Silica for High Optical Performance - DUV to UV/VIS Optics

Source: Heraeus Quartz America, LLC.

Suprasil® 1 and Suprasil® 2 are high purity synthetic fused silica materials available in different grades for different applications.

Both grades are made from flame hydrolysis and are homogeneous in the primary functional direction. Both grades are made with low  impurities and therefore have low absorption in the DUV, UV and Visible range.

Suprasil ®1: This isotropic 3D materials features high homogeneity and has no striations in all three dimensions. This is important for DUV to UV and Visible 3D optics such as prisms, etalons, steep lenses, beam splitters or other multiple axis optics.

Suprasil ®2: This 2D materials features high homogeneity and has no striations in main optical axis. This is important for lenses and windows. If striations are present, they are weak and parallel to the major faces, thus having no negative impact on optical performance.

Suprasil ®2 Grade A and B differ in specification of Index homogeneity:

  • Suprasil ®2 Grade A has max index variation Δn <=5ppm; and ideal for high performance windows, lenses
  • Suprasil ®2 Grade B has max index variation Δn <=10ppm; and ideal for lower performance windows, or optics with lower transmitted wave front error specifications.
