Bone Growth Stimulator Proves Effective with Non-union Fractures

Orthofix International has received notification from the FDA approving the usage of their Patient Registry Data to make claims about the Physio-Stim bone growth stimulator. According to the 729 patients involved in the study, 85% achieved fracture healing by using the Physio-Stim device alone.

Prior to this new data, according to Orthofix, the Physio-Stim had received FDA approval on clinical data showing that 80% of 140 patients who had not healed on their own within nine months of injury were able to attain healing with the use of Orthofix's device.

Physio-Stim bone growth stimulator is a non-surgical treatment that aids in the healing of non-union fractures. The device uses a very low-level pulsed electromagnetic field to activate the body's internal repair mechanism, thereby stimulating the body's natural healing process.

Different types of bone growth stimulators are also being evaluated for use on spine fusions and osteoporotic patients.
