Bucyrus selects SolidWorks 3D CAD software to drive design of heavy earth-moving equipment
Bucyrus recently developed one of its three main product lines, electric mining shovels, with SolidWorks software. Each shovel has more than 50,000 components and weighs up to 4 million pounds, with dipper capacities up to 90 cubic yards. Other products developed by Bucyrus include the 2570-WS, an excavator that weighs 13 million pounds and has a bucket capacity of 180 cubic yards. Bucyrus, with more than 1,500 employees worldwide, supplies equipment to virtually every large-scale surface mining company around the globe. SolidWorks is a leading provider of affordable, easy-to-use 3D CAD software for the mainstream market.
"Bucyrus was impressed with SolidWorks' ability to handle large, complex design assemblies," said Greg Dinkleman, Bucyrus' vice president of engineering. "Its ease of use and functionality enable our new employees to adapt more quickly than with any CAD products we have used in the past. We feel SolidWorks is the most cost-effective, powerful CAD solution available on the market."
With SolidWorks' 3D CAD software, Bucyrus engineers and designers save time and reduce manufacturing errors by creating more accurate designs and realistic prototypes for new parts and equipment.
"As the leader in the mainstream solid modeling market, SolidWorks is pleased to be working with industry leaders such as Bucyrus," said John McEleney, chief operating officer for SolidWorks. "Bucyrus' engineers and designers will enjoy the enhancements that we have made in SolidWorks 2001, which will ultimately lead to faster product development cycles."
Bucyrus is working with SolidWorks reseller Computer Aided Technology for implementation, training and support.
