Disposable Spacer Molds For Knee Surgery Cleared

Warsaw, IN - Biomet Inc. announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted marketing clearance for its patented StageOne Disposable Spacer Molds for knee revision surgery. The StageOne spacer molds are a series of silicone molds designed to be used in revision knee surgery following infection. Currently, when performing the first stage of a two-stage revision, surgeons must hand make bone cement spacers to provide a temporary knee joint.

"The StageOne spacer molds will provide the orthopedic surgeon with greater component accuracy while significantly reducing O.R. time," stated Biomet's President & Chief Executive Officer, Dane A. Miller, Ph.D. "The StageOne molds are yet another tool that will allow orthopedic surgeons to provide improved quality care for their patients."

Until now, only pre-made bone cement spacers have been available, limiting the options of the orthopedic surgeon.

Dr. Miller continued, "The StageOne spacer molds offer substantial advantages over traditional pre-made and hand-made cement spacers. We expect to enjoy a strong advantage in the revision knee market for a significant period of time."
