Edge Filters vs. Notch Filters For Raman Instrumentation

In any Raman system, the filter that blocks the laser line shapes the quality of your results. It determines how close to the laser you can measure, how much interference gets through, and how cleanly your spectra resolve. Edge filters block everything on one side of a set wavelength. Notch filters block only a narrow band around the laser. The right choice depends on your excitation wavelength, the Raman shifts you need to capture, fluorescence interference, and the spectral resolution your application demands. This article compares two filter designs that both block the laser by a factor of more than a million (OD>6).
