FDA Approves Halogen Light Sources for Medical Applications
The halogen light source can be incorporated as a lighting subsystem in products sold in industrial, scientific, photography, criminology and medical markets. The light source will also be incorporated in Luxtec's own vision systems sold to surgeons, physicians, dentists and surgical center staffs to improve visibility of operative sites and to enable documentation of surgical procedures.
The new lighting product is small and lightweight, making it suitable for a wide range of applications in which fiber optic cable and endoscopic light delivery is required.
"This cold-light solution -- so-called because of its low Kelvin temperature -- brings advanced levels of brightness, intensity, light control, filtering options and maintainability to the low-cost light source market," said David McNally, general manager of Fiber Imaging Technologies. "Such features, combined with a low price point, will help drive new applications for vision systems in many markets, especially the global surgical/medical market," he added.
The 150-watt halogen light source has a standard connector to which light-conducting devices such as fiber optic cables are attached to carry illumination to the point of interest. The device has a knob to control light intensity -- from normal through turbo ranges -- as well as a side insert slot for any one of a number of filters. The filters, both color and daylight, allow for considerable variation of the light beam as well as for specialized effects.
