FDA Clears Cataract-Removal Device
The Dodick Laser PhotoLysis system from Laser Corp. (New York) is a new technology using an ND:YAG laser with a small, patented, disposable surgical handpiece that does not expose the eye to the laser light. Because of this design, the laser energy is delivered in a safe, efficient manner that produces no clinically significant heat, eliminating the risk of thermal damage.
The system offers an alternative to the current method of ultrasound phacoemulsification. Cataracts are removed through a small incision that is nearly half the size of that used with ultrasound procedures. The system allows for the lens to be removed in one to two minutes.
The company is currently marketing and selling the Laser PhotoLysis through its wholly owned subsidiary, A.R.C. Laser Corp. (Salt Lake City).
