Fluidjet-Based Wound Debridement System Cleared

The FDA has cleared a new wound debridement system that uses ultrahigh-pressure jets of fluid to remove contamination and dead or damaged tissue from wounds. The fluidjet-based system is designed to minimize the risk of spreading bacteria or contamination further into a wound, since it creates its own suction at the site. In addition, the system requires less sterile fluid than conventional irrigation (lavage) devices.

The TraumaJet system is manufactured by HydroCision Inc. (Andover, MA) and will be marketed by Orthofix International N.V. (Richardson, TX). The product should be available by the third quarter of this year.

HydroCision Inc. is focused on the establishment of fluidjet technology as the basis for a new surgical modality. Other applications for the technology include arthroscopy, urology, gynecology, and other surgical markets.

Orthofix International provides minimally invasive medical devices for the orthopaedic and trauma markets.
