GE Develops Digital X-Ray Diagnostic Equipment

General Electric Co. (GE) announced that it has developed digital X-ray diagnostic equipment that provides high-quality imaging without utilizing X-ray film. According to a report from Nikkei America, the new equipment offers remote image transmission as well as lower levels of radiation exposure for patients.

Using a 41 x 41cm X-ray detection plate, the diagnostic equipment captures X-rays as they pass through a patient's body, and digitally processes the image via a computer. The image can be stored as digital data on an electronic medium such as an optical disk.

GE plans to market the equipment in the U.S. in 1999.
