Handheld spirometer with biodegradable sensor cleared
QRS Diagnostic LLC (Plymouth, MN) said today that it has received FDA clearance to market its Sensaire handheld spirometer for performing complete lung function testing. The device is the first spirometer to utilize the company's patented, biodegradable mouthpiece sensor.
Sensaire offers a touch-screen LCD with alphanumeric data entry including patient name and demographics typically found only in computer-based and large tabletop spirometers. The device weighs less than 13 ounces and performs tests throughout the day using a rechargeable nickel-metal hydride battery pack.
Sensaire is designed for use by physicians, nurses, hospital technicians, and home care specialists. The device will be available by early 2001 in two configurations, one bundled with a printer and the other with PC software for printing through any Windows-based computer.
