In-Mold Decorating

Source: AOtec, LLC
A new way to improve quality and reduce costs
What is in-mold decorating?
With in-mold decorating, a surface decoration (logos, text, designs ect.) is applied to plastic parts during the injection molding cycle. A foil containing all the decorative elements is precisely registered in the mold. When the mold is closed and resin is injected, the decoration is transferred from the foil to the part. As the part solidifies, the decoration is fused in place. The result is an attractive, crisply defined, tough, durable and fully decorated surface.

What are the advantages of IMD over other methods of decoration?
IMD is a one-step process compared to the multiplestep processes of post-mold decoration. IMD also offers numerous colors in a single process versus a separate process for each post-molded color.

How is the pattern produced on the foil?
The foil is printed using artwork created to be compatible with the AOtec process. The decoration can be logos, images, designs, text, symbols or patterns.

What are the color options?
An infinite variety of colors and metallic finishes are available. Color chips or specifications are matched to produce the precise color and hues required by the customer.

Can IMD patterns be backlit?
Translucent or transparent decorative foils can be applied over optically clear parts to achieve a "shinethrough" effect. Automobile instrument clusters produced with IMD appear opaque until the indicator lights are switched on.

Are metal foils available?

By using metallic foils with IMD, highly reflective plastic mirrors can be created, as well as applications such as electromagnetic screening to shield against EMI/RFI.

Can the surface be textured with IMD? A wide range of surfaces from optically smooth to textured finishes are available.

Can IMD be used with windows and borders? Optical quality windows can be produced with opaque or translucent IMD borders surrounding them.
