INDEX-800 Excimer Lasers

Packard BioChip TechnologiesDEX-800 Excimer lasers for industry from GSI Lumonics provide high-energy ultraviolet light that has a very short absorption depth in most organic materials and extremely high peak powers. The effect of this combination is to ablate thin layers of material from the surface of a workpiece with very precise control of feature size and depth. Features may be machined to have very tight tolerance, typically microns, and display minimal thermal damage around the machining site.

Other Excimer laser functions include stripping the insulating layer from the outside of fine wires to expose the delicate conductor inside. The drilling of precision orifices in a variety of plastic and polymer sheets and tubes for the purpose of providing a very precisely controlled flow of fluid has also been the basis of many successful applications. In addition to micromachining, marking wire in the aerospace industry and marking ceramic capacitors in the electronics industry have both been very productive applications of the Excimer lasers.
