MedSource Merges with Thermat Precision Technology
Thermat produces complex shaped, high-strength custom components using stainless steels, alloy and tool steels, cobalt chrome, carbon steels (standard), tungsten copper, tungsten alloys, ferrites, tool steels, tungsten carbide, and super alloy materials.
Thermat is the pioneer in precision metal injection manufacturing (PMIM)—an advanced metal injection molding (MIM) technique. Thermat's 65,000-sq-ft facility currently serves medical device OEMs by producing geometrically complex, high-performance parts, some holding 0.0005-in. tolerances to 4 Sigma limits in several dimensions. Roughly half of the components Thermat produces today are first-of-their-kind complex parts that simply could not be made economically any other way than by PMIM.
Thermat currently holds rights to over 35 patents worldwide and sublicenses MIM and PMIM technology in the USA, Canada and Europe. In addition, Thermat has filed for new patents to protect processing details of PMIM processing.
"We believe PMIM is the technology of the future for many of the medical device components that are machined today," said Richard Effress, chairman and CEO of MedSource Technologies Inc. "The acquisition of Thermat reinforces our commitment to our medical device OEM customers that MedSource will continue to seek technologies that will ultimately reduce their total product costs while improving quality."
Key management of Thermat will remain with MedSource, insuring continued responsiveness to customer needs.
