Industry leaders to share investing, business development insights
In addition, an extraordinary speaker list featuring the top names in the medical technology industry has been assembled for the event. Christopher J.P. Velis, Chairman & CEO of Medical Capital Advisors, will open the conference with his session, "The Seven Drivers of Value: Optimize your VC Funding and Exit." Velis has 15 years of experience serving as an investment banker to venture funds and high technology firms. Prior to founding Medical Capital Advisors, Velis was a partner, board member and managing director in charge of investment banking at HealthpointCapital.
Leading a workshop entitled "Strategies for Private and Government Reimbursement: Emerging Opportunities for Emerging Technology" will be David Gregory, Executive Vice President, and David Dafilou, Director of Consulting Services, of Presscott Associates.
Gregory has a varied background in healthcare ranging from hospital management to managed care network development and underwriting/pricing to provider and life sciences reimbursement. He is currently responsible for directing projects for all client types, including hospitals, physicians, health plans and life science and technology companies. Dafilou has extensive experience in developing and managing networks of physicians, ancillary and hospital providers in the Mid-Atlantic region. He is responsible for managing projects in the practice areas of managed care financial policy and reimbursement analysis; strategic planning; managed care contracting; network development and integrated delivery systems; revenue cycle reengineering; operations and utilization management; and educational seminars and skills training.
In addition, patent attorneys Michael McGurk and Eric Raciti of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner will discuss "IP Due Diligence Perspective From Both Sides of the Fence." McGurk has more than 17 years of experience representing domestic and international clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and his practice involves most aspects of intellectual property law with an emphasis on complex opinion work, portfolio management and client counseling involving chemical and medical device matters.
Raciti has considerable experience in intellectual property matters, particularly in medical devices. He served for five years as a patent examiner in the surgical arts and in addition served the Commissioner of Patents as an attorney in the Office of Legislative and International Affairs, and now works with startup and established companies to develop comprehensive and sophisticated patent strategies, including strategic patent procurement and portfolio development, and competitive intelligence and analysis.
Also, Allan Ferguson, Senior Partner at 3i, will address the topic of "Venture Capital Investing in Medical Technology Companies - 2006 State of Affairs." Ferguson has extensive knowledge of the health care sector, with a primary interest in drug discovery, bioinformatics and medical devices. He heads 3i's U.S. businesses and currently serves on the boards of TransMedics, Inc, Ulthera and Small Bone Innovations. Ferguson has more than 25 years of operating and management experience in engineering, manufacturing and research and development, and more than 20 years of experience in international venture capital investing with technology companies.
Finally, several leading venture capitalists will speak on the topic of "Assessing Late-Stage Opportunities." The keynote panel for this discussion includes David Milne, Managing Partner, SV Life Science Advisors; Zubeen Shroff, General Partner, Galen Associates; and Chinh E. Chu, Senior Managing Director, The Blackstone Group.
