Micro Therapeutics cleared to market new microcatheter and guidewire

Micro Therapeutics Inc. (Irvine, CA) has received FDA clearances to market an addition to its Rebar line of microcatheters as well as for the Mirage Guidewire.

The Rebar-18 is an over-the-wire microcatheter for used in both neuro and peripheral vascular procedures such as for the delivery of coils or other embolic materials, including MTI's own Onyx, applications of which are under study in the United States.

The Rebar family of micro catheters incorporates a next-generation braided design for added strength. Rebar-18 is the third model in the Rebar product line, which also includes Rebar-14, for neurovascular applications, and Rebar-27, for peripheral vascular applications, both introduced earlier in 2000. The company anticipates introducing additional lengths and diameters to suit a range of applications.

The Mirage guidewire is designed to be used in conjunction with MTI's Flow Rider Flow Directed microcatheter to access arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in the brain for interventional treatment. The Mirage features a small diameter that facilitates access to remote locations in the brain.

The Rebar family of micro catheters and the Mirage Guidewire also will be standard components of Micro Therapeutics' Onyx Liquid Embolic System (Onyx LES), a treatment for vascular abnormalities such as brain aneurysms and AVMs. When Onyx is released into a vascular abnormality, it quickly transforms into a solid, yet flexible, polymer mass, designed to fill the targeted defect and reduce the chance of rupture.

In Europe, Onyx has received CE Mark clearance for use in the treatment of AVMs, brain tumors and certain peripheral applications. Onyx is also being evaluated in feasibility studies for the treatment of brain aneurysms, abdominal aortic aneurysm endoleaks and uterine vein embolization, and is in clinical studies in the United States for the treatment of brain tumors.
