Ophthonix Z-View Aberrometer Wins Medical Design Excellence Award

The Ophthonix Z-View Aberrometer, designed by DD STUDIO, was recently honored with a coveted 2005 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA). The MDEA competition is the medical device community's premier awards program, recognizing contributions and advances in the design of medical products.

"The Z-View will be used to dramatically improve the vision of millions in the future," said Andreas Dreher, Ph.D. co-founder and president of Ophthonix. "The successful collaboration between Ophthonix and DD STUDIO yielded a product image that skillfully reflects the device's revolutionary technology."

The Z-View is the only vision correction system that allows eye care practitioners to diagnose and correct for 100 percent of their patients' optical imperfections. Previously, up to 20 percent of higher order aberrations that cause problems such as image fuzziness, glare sensitivity, and halos went undiagnosed. The Z-View's Wavefront-guided prescriptions offer eye care patients a non-surgical alternative for high-definition vision - with more clarity and crispness, and up to 20/10 vision acuity.

When Ophthonix enlisted DD STUDIO to help develop the Z-View, their common goal was to design an immediately recognizable "character" device that would also ease patient concerns and enhance technician comfort and efficiency. In sharp contrast to the intimidating appearance of many existing ophthalmic products, simplicity and approachability were factored in to every feature. All of the Z-View's components are contained internally, making this complex device appear very accessible. Soft, warm shapes, an open design with swooping curves, and touches of color in unexpected places also add to the product's universal appeal.

"The Z-View is an exceptional combination of distinct physical forms and a well-mapped graphic user interface," said Charles Curbbun, DD STUDIO's CEO. "The product's fresh aesthetics, resolved sculpted surfaces, and emphasis on ergonomics will define the market for years to come."

The 30 winners of the eighth annual MDEA competition will be honored at a ceremony during the Medical Design & Manufacturing East Conference and Exposition, June 13-15, 2005, at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention center.
