Packet Engines Routing Switch Solution Enables Boston Hospital to Implement Leading-Edge Medical-Imaging Application
SPOKANE, WASH. (March 2) BUSINESS WIRE -March 2, 1999--
PowerRail 5200 Gigabit Ethernet Backbone Enables
Brigham and Women's Hospital to Maintain and Manipulate
Three-Dimensional MRI and CAT Scan Files
Packet Engines, an Alcatel company and a worldwide leader in gigabit networking solutions, today announced the Surgical Planning Laboratory of Brigham and Women's Hospital has implemented the Packet Engines PowerRail(tm) 5200 routing switch to support bandwidth-intensive medical-imaging applications.
The networking solution enables physicians and staff at the Boston hospital to access more detailed three-dimensional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computer-Aided Tomography (CAT) Scan files more quickly. Brigham and Women's Hospital selected the Packet Engines solution because of its unique capability to reliably transfer mission-critical traffic at wire speed.
Brigham and Women's Hospital is a 663-bed facility and nonprofit teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. In selecting the Packet Engines routing solution, Brigham and Women's Hospital increased the capacity of its network more than ten-fold, enabling physicians and staff to quickly access the MRI and CAT Scan files at workstations throughout the Surgical Planning Laboratory. Also, Packet Engines' G-NIC II network interface card provides direct Gigabit Ethernet connectivity between the PowerRail 5200 routing switch backbone and high-end Sun Microsystems servers required for the storage of the massive files.
"Every decision the hospital makes about technology comes back to one question: Which option will enable us to provide better care to our patients?" said Dr. Ron Kikinis, director of the Surgical Planning Laboratory of Brigham and Women's Hospital. "The Packet Engines solution left no doubt about the correct answer. Because the PowerRail 5200 enables us to use these state-of-the-art imaging applications, our physicians are provided with a more clear understanding of what to expect and what procedures to carry out. This means our patients benefit from the highest quality of care that medical science and technology allow."
The PowerRail 5200 routing switch's compliance to standards, scalability, and interoperability, as well as Packet Engines' commitment to ongoing technical support, were other key factors in the hospital's decision.
"Health-care providers recognize the unique benefits of wire-speed routing via the PowerRail 5200," said Bernard Daines, president and CEO of Packet Engines. "No other solution simultaneously delivers such high levels of networking performance, reliability and flexibility; hospitals simply cannot accept less from their networks in any of those three areas."
The PowerRail 5200 routing switch, recently named a "Tester's Choice" award winner by Data Communications magazine, supports up to 73 ports of Gigabit Ethernet -- more than any other routing switch available. The PowerRail 5200 routing switch is the highest-performance non-blocking routing switch in the industry, with wire-speed, packet-by-packet routing of more than 37 million packets per second for IPv4, IPv6, and IPX. The PowerRail family of routing switches also provides the mission-critical resiliency demanded for large-scale enterprise, Metropolitan Area Network, and Internet Service Provider applications.
