Polymer Tubing Instruction Guide

custom tubing

Polymer tubing used in analytical and fluid handling applications is often machine-cut, which may result in uneven ends and partially obstructed thru-holes due to material shearing. To ensure optimal performance and a proper seal, users are advised to re-cut the tubing using a dedicated tubing cutter, creating a clean, square edge and a fully open flow path. Extra tubing length is included to accommodate this adjustment.

Working with polymer tubing under pressure requires specific safety precautions. Eye protection should always be worn when near pressurized tubing, and open flames should be extinguished when flammable solvents are in use. Additionally, users should consult chemical compatibility charts before selecting tubing to confirm suitability for the intended application.

PEEK™ tubing, while chemically resistant and widely used, has particular handling requirements. At high flow rates with organic solvents, static charge can accumulate on the tubing’s surface, potentially causing electrical sparking. It’s important not to use tubing that is visibly stressed or kinked, as it may compromise performance or safety.

A simplified chemical compatibility chart shows how common polymers—PEEK™, Teflon®, Tefzel®, Radel® R, and Halar®—interact with various solvents, including aromatics, chlorinated compounds, ketones, and acids. While many polymers perform well across solvent categories, temperature limitations vary: PEEK operates up to 100°C, PFA up to 80°C, and FEP only up to 50°C.
