RFID And 2-Dimensional Bar Code Patient Identification Solutions Previewed

San Fernando, CA - Precision Dynamics Corporation (PDC) will showcase a series of new Auto ID products for healthcare at the upcoming HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) Conference, February 13-16, in San Diego, CA. PDC's Auto ID wristband solutions are used in a variety of healthcare applications, most of which share major objectives of improving patient safety and streamlining operations.

Bar Code

PDC's new Aztec 2-dimensional bar code wristband, which is yet to be officially named and released, has Aztec 2-D Code around the entire band circumference, which increases scanability at the point-of-care. Aztec bar code is more space-efficient than other bar codes with the ability to encode up to 3750 characters. Also, since a bar code is always in view, caregivers no longer have to disrupt sleeping patients in order to find the code to scan.

Two new wristband-certified bar code printers, a hand held combo reader, and infant bar code tags also add to PDC's expanding bar code solutions product line and will be shown at HIMSS. The recently released Precision Bar Code Tags, used in Labor & Delivery departments, thread onto a wristband and eliminate common curvature issues often related to infant bar code wristbands. The infant tags accommodate either linear or 2D bar codes, along with up to three lines of text.

A commitment to positive identification and patient safety is the reason why hospitals nationwide have implemented PDC Bar Code Solutions in various departments for medication administration, to automate glucose monitoring, specimen collection, and other point-of-care testing.

RFID Solutions

Over the last few years, PDC has successfully tested its RFID wristband solutions in hospitals worldwide, and continues to extend its offering of RFID systems. Two new products will be previewed at HIMSS: the PDC Smart Station and Smart CompuBand-S RFID Wristbands.

The Smart Station, still in development, is a mini-kiosk that processes patient transactions. The system provides patients with a quick and easy-to-use self check-in at admissions, and allows hospital staff to efficiently view appointments, consent forms, co-pay collections, and positively identify patients.

The new Smart CompuBand-S RFID Wristbands can be simultaneously printed with bar code information and programmed with RFID information on demand using an RFID printer/programmer at a frequency of 13.56 MHz, while the tamperproof and secure lanyard snap closure provides maximum security. PDC RFID Wristbands help improve hospital system efficiency, tracking, and communication, while preventing data entry and collection errors.

Recent PDC RFID applications for positive patient identification in departments including OR, acute-care, and blood bank include Georgetown University Hospital (DC); Massachusetts General Hospital (MA); Jacobi Medical Center (NY); and Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (Taiwan).
