Shifamed Announces Key Additional Patents For Coaxial Steerable Catheter Technology

Shifamed LLC, a medical technology incubator, recently announced the allowances of claims in key additional patents for its steerable catheter technology that enables tip deflection without the limitations of traditional pullwire technology. Pull-wire based deflection systems have inherent restrictions including poor torque response and ‘whipping’ of the tip during rotation. The patented technology includes a first-of-its-kind design to improve performance of catheters or surgical instruments across several applications including neurovascular, peripheral, electrophysiology, and structural heart, namely left atrial appendage (LAA) closure, PFO closure, and valve repair.

“Today, there is a push for smaller devices to be delivered in increasingly challenging anatomies. For many indications, steerable catheter delivery systems are required to place a device or implant into the proper location,” commented Amr Salahieh, Founder and Chairman of Shifamed. “Shifamed has engineered an innovative technology that provides the physician superior precision and control for delivery in complex anatomies and can be customized to address several applications.”

Kalila Medical, a Shifamed portfolio company, is the first licensee of this technology, and has a worldwide exclusive license for electrophysiology applications.

Shifamed will exhibit its customizable coaxial steerable catheter system in booth 710 at this year’s MedTech World (MD&M) West Conference taking place at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA February 11-13, 2014.
