Silicon Photodiodes are made from either "n" type or, "p" type Silicon wafers and fabricated using standard semiconductor processing techniques. Silicon Photodiodes are photovoltaic and generate an output current in proportion to the light applied to their surface. Silicon Photodiodes are capable of both, forward and reversed biased operation. Silicon Photodiodes have inherently linear outputs and are primarily used where an accurate measurement of light is required. Silicon PIN - p-intrinsic-n) Photodiodes generally have low capacitance and have Rise Times on the order of 10^-9 sec.
Applications:
- Light Level Detection – Outdoor Security Lamps, Optical Switches, Laser Control, Traffic Control, Laser Survey
- Medical Devices – Blood (Pulse) Oximetry, Urinalysis Equipment, Imaging of Body Tissue
- Spectroscopy Devices – Optical Power meters, Wavelength Measurement equipment, Chemical Analysis equipment
- Telecommunications – High Speed Data Transmission
- Computers – Lightpen Optical Receiver, Optical Encoders ( Mouse, Trackball)
