The air handling system of the SC-1, Source Capture, features an exceptionally quiet backward-inclined impeller. It effectively moves the captured air through the prefilter, HEPA filter and the Helical Carbon Composite Module with its integral final particulate filter wrap. The sealed motor is rated for continuous operation and requires no maintenance. A housing further separates the motor from the air stream.

The HEPA filter removes airborne particles, including smoke, dust, powders and bioaerosols with an efficiency of 99.99% and increases the life of the Carbon Composite Module. A pleated 40% ASHRAE prefilter protects the HEPA filter. The patented Carbon Composite Module removes a wide range of gaseous contaminants using various combinations of adsorptive, chemisorptive and reactive agents. Air is directed from the impeller by inlet blades into eight filtering channels oriented in a helical pattern. Fine (30 x 50 mesh) activated carbon granules are bound to a filter medium which makes up the walls of these channels. This bonding is accomplished without using glues or other adsorption hindering materials. The use of fine mesh carbon results in an approximate four to eight fold increase in surface area, per weight of carbon, over coarser carbon. Additional active granular material is added. Air passes both in a helical pattern along the filter medium channels and through their walls. This unique module provides an immense surface-exposure area, optimal dwell time, low air flow resistance and greater carbon and reagent utilization.
