Specialty Blades was founded in 1985 to address the complex design needs of cutting applications in the medical field as well as the needs of other industries and original equipment manufacturers. These applications required high performance, razor sharp custom-made cutting blades that would out perform the standard blades available "off the shelf." Specialty Blades developed a process utilizing custom-designed, programmable Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery to generate and sharpen blanks for the most sophisticated medical applications. This process featured precisely controlled, multiple step grinding and honing sequences similar to that used on razor blades, but it could accommodate different steels not available in strip form and unique edge configurations not possible with continuous strip sharpening.

After 15 years of manufacturing high quality blades in Staunton, VA, Specialty Blades has doubled the size of its manufacturing facility to 40,000 sqft. The building expansion reflects both continued growth in the medical blade business and Specialty Blades' commitment to technological innovation. Recent technological developments include a custom circular blade and tube grinding machine, a state-of-the-art programmable video inspection system to consistently measure blade features at a magnification up to 250X and program part measuring sequences that are accurate within .0002" and a high precision laser cutter allowing quick turnaround times for rapid prototyping and low volume manufacturing runs. Technology improvements continue to be at the forefront of Specialty Blades' strategic plan, and the company is committed to continually seeking new methods of manufacture and sharpening to better serve your custom blade requirements.
