SpineVision's PediGuard Wins Singapore "President's Design Of The Year Award"

Paris & Singapore - SpineVision, announced recently that its patented medical device, PediGuard, has been conferred the prestigious Singapore "President's Design of the Year Award" in the "Product & Industrial Design" category by S.R. Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore, at a gala awards ceremony last evening in Singapore.
The Award recognizes the outstanding collaboration between SpineVision and PSB Technologies, which further developed the original PediGuard design under SpineVision's management, to perfectly adapt its ergonomy to the surgeons' needs. "No doubt, PediGuard is a great example of a successful marriage between a true innovative concept and high technology design," said Ulrich Schraudolph, Design Director, PSB Technologies.
"PediGuard is a not only a unique, first-of-its-kind design. The device also warrants merit for its outstanding contribution to the spine surgeons and the thousands of patients who have benefited from its accuracy and precision," said Maurice Bourlion, PediGuard co-inventor, who managed the PediGuard project at SpineVision. Indeed, accuracy of pedicle screw placement is still an important issue in spine surgery: published rates of intraoperatively ‘misplaced' pedicle screws range from 10 to 40 percent, some of which result in pathological consequences such as spinal cord damage, including paraplegia or quadriplegia. PediGuard is the world's first and only wireless freehand drilling instrument capable of accurately detecting changes in tissue type, thus alerting surgeons to potential pedicular or vertebral breaches during pedicle screw site preparation. "PediGuard is an example of technology innovation that greatly benefits medicine. It offers us a solution to the challenges of accurate pedicle screw placement, thus making surgery safer," said Dr. Hee-Kit Wong, Head, Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery, National University Hospital of Singapore.
To respond to the surgeons' needs, PediGuard has been designed in three diameters: 3.2mm, 4.0mm, and the recently launched 2.5mm diameter. "We believe that the latest design of PediGuard, the 2.5mm-diameter Tri tip, has tremendous potential as a unique solution in cases where the size, or the distortion of the pedicles, makes it even more difficult to safely place pedicle screws," said Julian Mackenzie, SpineVision's Chief Executive Officer.
