STAAR Surgical Receives FDA Approval for First Intraocular Lens Implant Designed for Cataracts and Astigmatism

STAAR Surgical Co. announced that FDA has given marketing approval for the STAAR TORIC IOL, the only intraocular (IOL) lens designed to reduce pre-existing astigmatism in cataract patients.

Until now, cataract patients with astigmatism would require correction through eyeglasses or additional surgery with its associated costs and risks. The STAAR TORIC IOL is the only intraocular lens designed to predictably reduce astigmatism and correct cataracts in a single procedure. It also is the only post cataract lens demonstrated to improve uncorrected visual acuity.

STAAR also announced that the company is making available its new proprietary software, STAARVUE. This tool allows surgeons to visually demonstrate for their patients how astigmatism affects their uncorrected preoperative vision and shows them specifically how their vision will look postoperatively.
