STS Biopolymers Cleared to Market Echo-Coat Ultrasound Biopsy Needles

STS Biopolymers Inc. (Rochester, NY) announced today that it received 510(k) market clearance from FDA for its line of Echo-Coat Ultrasound Needles to be used in ultrasound-guided procedures. Unlike standard needles, Echo-Coat needles are highly visible in ultrasound images, giving physicians unprecedented feedback during a needle procedure such as a biopsy or amniocentesis.

The devices feature a unique biocompatible polymer coating developed by STS Biopolymers. The coating acts like an ultrasound contrast agent, providing a bright, clear image of the entire needle.

FDA has cleared the needle for use where improved visibility on ultrasound images is required. Besides biopsy and amniocentesis, other needle applications include vascular access, aspiration, and drainage.

Echo-Coat permanent polymer coating is available for other medical devices under license from STS Biopolymers. The company develops high-performance coatings for medical manufacturers including antimicrobial, anti-clotting and drug delivery coatings as well as ultraslippery lubricious coatings for catheters and guidewires
