Venetec Introduces StatLock IV Premium
IV Premium replaces tape securement -- providing improved patient comfort, cost savings, and reduced needlestick risk to healthcare workers -- by minimizing unscheduled catheter restarts and complications related to tape securement. The new device features a refined, more intuitive design -- including an over-the-top, snap-fit retainer -- that makes it easier and faster to apply than tape.
"We expect widespread adoption of StatLock IV Premium, which is already being used internationally and has been very well accepted," said Gene Starr, Venetec's president and CEO. "It's also used by the Saint Luke's Health System, a major healthcare system in the Kansas City region, and at other hospitals around the country."
Widely published clinical studies have shown StatLock products improve catheter dwell times and reduce unscheduled IV catheter restarts by more than 70 percent. Studies also have demonstrated that the devices reduce catheter-related complications such as phlebitis and infiltration by restricting catheter micro-movements. StatLock also provides substantial cost savings in materials and labor compared to tape.
"Venetec is already the acknowledged market leader, and the company's growth will accelerate even more rapidly now because of our proven strategy of gaining acceptance by integrated delivery networks," said Starr. "This acceptance is due to the realization by CFOs and directors of nursing that StatLock's clinical benefits translate into cost savings."
Venetec expects a similar acceleration in sales of the StatLock IV Foley securement device, Starr said. "This will be driven by the new, multi-center prospective, randomized clinical trial conducted by Dr. Rabih Darouiche of Baylor College of Medicine. His findings showed a 45 percent reduction in catheter-associated urinary tract infections attributable to StatLock. This study, presented recently at the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America annual meeting (SHEA), confirms that StatLock is the best medical device for reducing the most common nosocomial infection in the world."
StatLock is fast becoming the standard in catheter securement because it is the only securement device supported by a broad base of peer-reviewed, published data on clinical outcomes. StatLock is used in settings ranging from the neonatal ICU to the nursing home, and in hospitals both large and small.
Venetec's IV safety securement products are contained in more than 95 percent of extended-dwell catheter kits in the U.S., and its peripheral products are used in more than 300 hospitals in the U.S. Venetec has agreements for StatLock usage with many healthcare organizations, including Novation, Premier, Inc., and the Veterans Health Administration. StatLock devices are included in safety infusion systems made by Baxter Healthcare, B. Braun, Arrow International, BD (Becton Dickinson), C.R. Bard, Cook, Inc., Kendall/Tyco, and others.
Peripheral IV securement represents the largest market opportunity for Venetec International within the global $2 billion IV catheter/medical tubing securement market, in which the company is the acknowledged leader. Venetec has already captured more than 7 percent of the domestic market for IV catheter securement. The market encompasses more than 275 million peripheral IV catheters sold annually.
