Wright Medical Group, Inc. Enhances Hip Offering With Launch Of Additional PROFEMUR Stem Designs And Introduction Of Unique Less-Invasive Surgical Technique

Arlington, TN - Wright Medical Group, Inc., a global orthopaedic medical device company, is pleased to announce new product and technique innovations for its comprehensive line of solutions for hip surgery. The introductions include the Company's first cemented modular neck hip implant, a new revision stem that combines wedged-stem design with modular neck technology, and a unique total hip arthroplasty surgical technique that does not require the hip to be dislocated during the procedure.

SUPERCAP Total Hip Arthroplasty – For Minimized Recovery Times Through Soft Tissue Care

The SUPERCAP technique for total hip arthroplasty was developed by Stephen S. Murphy, M.D., of New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. The goal of this approach is to safely perform total hip arthroplasty while minimizing the effects on the surrounding soft tissues. A unique feature of the SUPERCAP approach is that it does not require surgical dislocation of the hip during the procedure, resulting in maximum preservation of the surrounding soft tissue. Furthermore, the technique is performed through a single incision, which may help reduce patient recovery times for a quicker return to everyday life. As Dr. Murphy explained, "The soft tissues surrounding the hip are critical for function, strength, and stability. The more respectful we are of the soft tissues during surgery, the better the prospects for both short and long-term outcomes."

PROFEMUR Xm Hip Stem – Cemented Fixation with Modular Neck Technology

Now available to surgeons in the U.S., Wright's PROFEMUR® Xm Hip Stem is the Company's first modular neck hip implant with cemented fixation. The highly polished stem design features a dual taper for cement engagement and implant rotational stability. Implant modularity simplifies stem insertion and offers surgeons unsurpassed flexibility in addressing a variety of patient anatomies. While a number of orthopaedic manufacturers are developing modular neck implants, Wright is the pioneer of this technology offering a broad spectrum of modular necks and modular neck stem philosophies backed by over 20 years of clinical results.

PROFEMUR Z Revision Hip Stem – Wedged-Stem Design and Modular Neck Technology

Wright's wedged-philosophy PROFEMUR Z Revision Stem is a long-awaited solution for surgeons who desire to use a wedged stem in their revision hip replacement surgeries. The implant is a longer version of the currently available PROFEMUR Z Stem, which is currently Wright's most-widely used primary hip stem. Because the PROFEMUR Z Revision Stem uses the same instrumentation and surgical technique as the PROFEMUR Z Primary Stem, the system will provide many surgeon customers with ease of conversion during their hip revision surgeries. The PROFEMUR Z Revision Stem will be useful in many revision scenarios, specifically revisions of loose stems with severe proximal and distal bone loss.

"Wright continues to focus on total hip replacement innovations which allow physicians to never compromise patient outcomes," expressed Patrick Fisher, Sr. Director of Ortho Recon Marketing. "In addition, Wright takes great pride in its ‘first to market' product launches. The SUPERCAP technique, in which surgeons never surgically dislocate the hip, and our unique PROFEMUR Xm cemented modular neck femoral stem are two more innovations that keep Wright one step ahead of the competition."
