As cell therapies become more widely available, safely and efficiently transferring them from vials is a critical challenge. Traditional needle and syringe methods risk needle stick injuries. To mitigate this, West has investigated its needle-free polycarbonate Vial Adapter™ (VA) devices. A key concern is the potential incompatibility of polycarbonate with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a common cryopreservation agent. Literature suggests DMSO can leach bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor, from polycarbonate. Therefore, West specifically studied the interaction of cell media and various DMSO solutions with their VAs to assess both performance and material compatibility.
